Shmuel   Brand    (b. 1921)
Israeli artist Shmuel Brand (born in Germany, 1921) has lived and worked in Tel-Aviv for many years. He was a pupil of Aron Avi and later graduated from the Bezalel Acadamy of Art in Jerusalem.
Brand is a member of the Israeli Artist Association and has taken part in any one-man shows and group exhibitions in well-known galleries all over the country.

His unique oil technique is emphasizing relief and very pastose material. He also prints multi-colored collagraphs with the same character of relief.
Brand painted a "Cycle of the Aleph-Beit". He plunges deeply into the mysterious world of the "Aleph-Biet" and has created one or more paintings for each letter. His paintings, in spite of their modern conception, are the expression of his deep identification with Jewish tradition and also his artistic credo.
Recently he painted a series of "Homages" to well known historic persons of the Jewish genius and also a series of amulets (charms) inspired by old cabbalistic books.

The artist explains the meaning of the letter in his painting by quoting Rabbi Levi Izchock from Berdichev: "White spaces between letter are also letters - to be revealed with the coming of the Messiah."
